What Is Flow??
You're probably asking yourself, what the heck is flow?? Does it have something to do with pipes? Water? Can you spit some killer freestyle? Unfortunately, my rapping skills are not that great...But that's not a problem because it has nothing to do with flow.
Flow is defined by the scientific community as a mental state in which complete focus and attention is upon the activity at hand, usually accompanied by feelings of excitement, joy, ecstasy and serenity. You feel in control. Your sense of time becomes distorted. You are challenged, but know that you can accomplish the task at hand. THAT is the flow that we're all about.
People can reach the flow state with pretty much any activity that they enjoy, video games, chess, writing, cooking, exercising... it just so happens that hooping is a way that I (and TONS of other people) have found that gets me to that point while including exercise, dance and looking pretty freakin' badass when you land a cool trick.
Flow arts? Yep, flow arts. There is an entire world of flow out there and hooping is just one category. Fans, staves, buugeng, balls for juggling, poi, clubs, nunchucks, rope darts, and pixie sticks are some examples of other props used for flow. New props, tricks and combos are created all the time by creatives around the world. Oh, did I mention that people eventually grow to the point where they light their props up and spin FIRE?!?! It's quite the community!
Fear kept me from doing a lot in the past, and I never thought I would grow in the ways that I have through hooping. I was always afraid to 'look stupid'. The great thing about hooping is that every single person I have met because of it has been spectacularly awesome. Kind, welcoming, open, and encouraging people that have help me push myself forward. No matter your skill level, no one is going to say that you 'look stupid' doing anything.
Even if hoops are not your thing, I implore you to go out and give the flow arts a go! Get out there, make new friends, learn to love yourself more, look like a badass!!! Try something new, you just might love it!
